Hyaluronic acid injection boosts knee function and joint motion in osteoarthritis patients

What's new?

A single intra-articular injection of highly concentrated hyaluronic acid remarkably improves knee joint motion quality and clinical function in patients with osteoarthritis.

As per the outcomes of a study, a single intra-articular injection of highly concentrated hyaluronic acid (HA) into the knee joint can lead to meaningful improvements in both joint movement and function in people with osteoarthritis (OA).

The study involved 40 patients with knee OA and compared their results to 50 healthy individuals. Each OA patient received one intra-articular injection of a gel form of HA. Researchers then monitored changes in joint performance using vibroarthrography (VAG)—a tool that tracks vibrations and sounds during joint movement—alongside the WOMAC questionnaire, which examines pain, stiffness, and physical ability.

The findings were encouraging! The VAG analysis showed a noticeable drop in vibration-related markers (vibroacoustic emissions like VMS, R4, P1, and P2), indicating smoother and more efficient joint movement shortly after treatment. These improvements lasted throughout the 60-day observation period. Patients also reported less pain and stiffness, and better movement, as reflected in remarkably improved Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores at both 30 and 60 days after the injection.

What sets this study apart is its objective approach. Unlike earlier studies that relied mainly on patient feedback, this research employed advanced motion tracking to check real-time changes in joint quality. The results suggest that HA injections not only relieve symptoms but also help restore how the joint actually moves. These findings highlight HA as a promising option for tackling knee OA and call attention to the importance of using tools like VAG to better comprehend treatment effects in real-world patients.
