Key take away

Cinitapride (1 mg thrice a day) effectively relieves symptoms of functional dyspepsia and overlapping gastrointestinal disorders, showing rapid improvement and a favorable safety profile in real-world use.

Background

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a prevalent digestive disorder marked by prolonged upper abdominal distress. It often occurs alongside conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or functional constipation (FC), making management challenging. Researchers conducted a prospective, multicenter, single-arm study to explore how well cinitapride alleviates FD symptoms and its safety in Chinese patients, including those with overlapping gastrointestinal conditions, under real-world clinical settings.

Method

A total of 1,012 Chinese outpatients with FD, with or without coexisting GERD, IBS, or FC, were enrolled across multiple centers. All participants were given cinitapride 1 mg thrice a day. Symptom relief was assessed at 2 and 4 weeks using standardized scores measuring severity and frequency. Safety was monitored by reported adverse events, routine electrocardiograms (ECGs), and laboratory evaluations.

Result

Patients with FD showed significant symptom improvement over time. By week 2, most patients experienced noticeable relief, which further increased by week 4. Those with only FD improved more rapidly and to a greater extent than patients with overlapping conditions such as GERD, IBS, or FC. Overall, symptom severity decreased substantially from week 2 to week 4, demonstrating the effectiveness of cinitapride treatment (Table 1).

The most frequent adverse event was asymptomatic ECG changes (n = 8), with no serious safety concerns reported.

Conclusion

Cinitapride was both highly effective and well-tolerated in patients with FD, including those with coexisting gastrointestinal disorders. The findings endorse its use as a dependable treatment in routine clinical practice, delivering rapid symptom relief while revealing a favorable safety profile.
