In children (aged 2–18 years) suffering from intractable epilepsy, Modified Atkins Ketogenic Diet can effectively reduce the frequency of seizures.

Background

This pilot experimental study determined Modified Atkins Diet (MAD)'s effectiveness, tolerance, compliance, and adverse effects over a 6-month period in children struggling with severe neurological disorder.

Method

This study was conducted on children aged 2–18 years suffering from severe intractable epilepsy.

Consecutive sampling methodology was employed, comprising a total sample size of 31 pediatrics. The principal outcome was assessment of the decrease in seizure frequency pre and post the implementation of the MAD ketogenic diet. Adverse effects, compliance, and tolerance of the MAD ketogenic diet were the the secondary outcomes ascertained.

Result

Among 31 eligible subjects, MAD was administered for one month to all, with 41.9% continuing for three months and 29% for six months. Seizure frequency reduction was notable: 50% in the first month, 62% in the third month, and 83.3% in the sixth month, as shown in Figure 1:

Common adverse effects encompassed diarrhea and vomiting. In 58.1% of subjects, noncompliance was observed. To aid adherence, a MAD food menu guidebook was developed for parents.

Conclusion

MAD demonstrated significant reductions in seizure frequency over the study period, with statistical significance noted in the sixth month. However, further randomized, controlled, multicenter trials with larger samples and extended observation periods are warranted.
